I'd recommend this lens for three types of people:
1) People who want to get an idea of the L series lenses that you need a lens 70-200mm focal length relatively low cost;
2) People who already have the 2.8 L 70-200mm IS lens you have to carry that big thing around for a long time;
3) People who want a 70-200mm L series need not of/2.8 IS.
They call me a coward, but shot 1000-2000 shots a day in the field with 70-200mm f / 2. 8 IS gets tired, especially if you are holding hands. This lens is relatively cheap for the L series glass, the difference in optical quality is almost imperceptible from 2.8, and is rugged and ergonomic enough to wear all day.
When I think of pulling all day, especially over several days, this is the goal that I carry with me, not the 2.8 IS. It is shorter, narrower and lighter. While you can not feel the difference when you shoot a couple of hours, two people of equal strength and endurance and give you the f/2.8 f / 4 IS or sent by a day and you know it will come back with aching arms when the day is over.
In a body FOVCF 1.6 x the 70-200mm focal range lens makes this a little tight, but at 1.3 x 1.0 x FOVCF, this focal length range is pretty impressive. When I travel, I like this pair of glasses with 17-40mm f / 4 and use my feet to fill the gap between 40 and 70 mm (also took over the el-cheapo 50mm f / 1. 8 so you can shoot low light, and 1.4x teleconverter to give me a reach of 450 mm effective) - this is a good light and relatively inexpensive package. In addition, while a good chunk of pocket money, this goal is not as expensive as the 2.8 versions, and so is much less than something to worry about when traveling or shooting under adverse conditions.
As before, I have not found anything I do not like about this lens (well, except for the loss of a one-stop 2.8).
I have to say that if you are looking for a single lens for general purpose work, it is not. This objective is for specfic purposes. This lens works best as half of a pair, taking the top useful focal lengths, while using something like the 17-40mm f/4L or 2.8 L 24-70mm to handle lower range of focal lengths. If you are looking for a luggage worldwide lens no-change, try the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. This is a great value, the focal length range is the sweet spot, and optics are not bad.
Otherwise, if you qualify for one of three categories at the beginning of this post, I highly recommend this lens for you.
