First, let me tell you a little about myself so you can evaluate what my expectations are for the camera. I am strictly an amateur photographer and use the camera a few times a month in museums, outdoor parks and vacations. In addition to pictures of my dog, my photography is mainly composed of static subjects. This is my second SLR.
Enough of me in the camera. The 7D is a fairly bulky SLR and dwarves "entry level" models like the Olympus E-510 (see my photos), but not larger than the Nikon D300s. That said, it is uncomfortably large and is quite easy to wear all day. The build quality is excellent and the camera has a luxury solid feel to it. The 7D fits nicely in my hands and of medium size, with 28-135 kit lens is very well balanced. All buttons are easily accessible and, if you used a Canon before, easy to understand. The magnesium body is sealed against dust and moisture. The shutter button is conveniently located and has a well-defined point halfway. A control dial on the back of the camera and behind the shutter button too. There is also a joystick like the back of the camera.
A large (3 ") and high resolution (920,000 pixels) camera screen again with a secondary LCD screen on top (with backlight). The screen is a pleasure to use when reviewing images of focus, and when in manual focus mode live view magnificent. Compared to the 3-inch 420 000 pixel screen of my Panasonic LX3 is a definite upgrade, and makes a noticeable difference.
The display is large and bright and has 100% coverage. Coming from Olympus, which has a very narrow visor-like tunnel, was a revelation, and was one of the reasons why he decided to step up to the 7D. In addition, by using a transmission LCD viewfinder makes up only see to confirm the approach are the focus method selected (for example, a single box when using a focal point, or the media when used automatic selection of auto focus method). Furthermore, network composition may be imposed in the viewfinder. The information display in the bottom of the display is large and bright and has a lot of shooting and camera information.
The camera is very sensitive and becomes almost instantly. The sensor cleaning occurs when you turn on or off camera, but can be interrupted during power up. Approach speeds with the kit lens is very fast, even in low light (40 watt lamps two one television as the only source of light in the room of a 17 'x 11'). Photo quality is excellent. There are various styles of images can opt to change the contrast, sharpness, hue and saturation of photos. In any case, 99% of the time, the colors are natural, the exposure is correct, and dynamic range is excellent. At this level of camera, which is expected though. What I really love about the 7D ISO is noise, or lack thereof. The luxury of feeling safe while shooting at high ISO is priceless. I've taken a good number of shots up to ISO 3200 and I have no complaints. Of course there is some noise, and noise reduction softness it brings, but for a 18 MP image at ISO 3200, I have no complaint. ISO speeds of 3200 are good too, but I reserve the use of emergency, which is looking quite elaborate. The relatively large APS-C sensor not only provides low noise, but also allows me to produce blurred origins or great depth of field. I could not achieve the same degree of effect on the smaller sensor 4 / 3 on Olympus, and certainly could not see my point and shoot cameras unless I was in macro mode. There is a characteristic light Auto optimizer that attempts to correct photos that are not properly exposed (eg, the issues are too dark or highlights are lost). It works well for the most part, but, depending on the subject, the differences are very subtle.
The mode of high-definition movie is very well done too. You set your attention, either automatically or manually before you start recording. You can improve during recording, but it definitely will notice. You can adjust the shutter speed, aperture, ISO and manual movie mode. There is a mono microphone on the front of the camera, or you can connect a stereo microphone. Pressing the shutter button, you can stop briefly to make a film stills, similar to that of S Series Canon super zoom cameras.
The kit lens is very well built and very strong, from corner to corner. Purple fringing is not a big problem in my photos. The field of view is a bit tight, though. 44.8mm lens begins with a field of 1.6 x 7D of view crop factor taken into account. Without a wide angle is not an ideal all around the lens, but I do feel it's worth the extra money for the game with this goal. You get a nice engine, ultrasound, image stabilizer, 4.8 x lens with minimal cost.
The only thing I like about the camera so far is that Auto ISO can not limit how high it goes. I think the 7D ISO 3200 wants to jump up fairly quickly in low light when you have to go nearly that high. When you tab to the ISO 3200 standard I find I can dial up to ISO 1600 manually and still get an acceptable shutter speed, so the Canon is being very cautious to jump so high. The other thing I like is the fact that when you're in playback mode most that can zoom out a grid of 9 images. With a high resolution display would appreciate a net reproduction rates that were more photos. Finally, I think the process to set the custom white balance a little long winded. You have to take a picture of a white reference object and then go to the menus to select the picture as the reference photo. In other cameras, although Canon point and shoot, the process is much faster, and makes no reference picture memory card. It is the worst, and I've become very fast to him, but could be better.
In short ... a great semi-pro SLR. The Canon 7D covers all the bases.

12/19/2009 Update: You can change the depth of field preview button to move to another auto focus mode when held down, instead of a preview of depth of field. I find this very useful because it almost never use depth of field. Now, if I think the auto focus is not always choose the right theme for a shot, simply hold down the depth of field preview button to temporarily switch from automatic selection to detect focus mode. Very convenient.
01/04/2010 Update: I just returned from a trip to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The 7D was a joy to use. It took about 160 pictures. Of which only 4 or 5 are out of focus due to an error of the camera. The low light performance continues to impress me. I took many photos at ISO 1600 up to 3200 and all photos are fully usable. In the "Sea Life" large "African Mammals" rooms which was able to take clear pictures of these rooms very faint, while shooting handheld with no flash and ISO 3200 (see photos). Anyone who has visited these exhibitions knows how difficult it can be to shoot.
10/20/2010 Update: I still love this camera. No problems to report. In fact, I was a little upset when Canon introduced the 60D, as it seemed that could have saved some money by buying it, however, one of the students in my digital photography class bought one, and if it is a good camera, the build quality and design are far from the standards in the 7D. Happy with my purchase.
04/05/2011 Update: Still no problems to report with the camera. I took him out after a snow storm, when it was flurrying and survived very well.
